John Maher – Founder and President

John Maher is the founder and president of John Maher Builders Inc., award winning residential homebuilder located in Spring Hill, TN. John is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University where he attended on a football scholarship.

Following his graduation in1976, he moved to Franklin to begin his career as a special education teacher and wrestling coach with the Franklin Special School District where he served as an educator for 10 years.

In the mid 1980’s, Maher purchased a how-to-book on homebuilding that cost $6.95 which changed the course of his path from a teacher to a homebuilder.

With the how-to book as a guide, Maher built his first house which he started during a summer break from teaching. Not long after, he took a leap of faith and began building homes full time. He has superseded any expectations he set for himself.

Since starting to build in 1985, John has not only built several communities, but quite a legacy. John Maher Builders has been the number one homebuilder in Spring Hill, Tennessee for over 25 years and recently started its 2000th home. From a population of 1464 in 1990, Spring Hill has grown to reach 36,530 in 2016. Approximately one in every six families living in Spring Hill today live in a John Maher Builders home or community.

Maher has a special interest in giving back to the community that has given him so much. He has been the title sponsor for the John Maher Builders Country Ham Festival for all 13 years. The company is the title sponsor for the Mayor’s Ball for the second year in a row. JMB has supported Spring Hill Pay It Forward, Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity and the WILLCO Awards among many other worthy causes. Partnering with the Williamson Herald for the 11th year, the John Maher Scholar Athlete Awards are given monthly during the school year, culminating in a banquet at which several recipients are chosen to receive scholarships.

Not forgetting his roots, John made a large contribution to his alma mater, Oak Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, so he could name the field to honor two very influential men in his life. The Rutenschroer/Maher Field celebrates his football coach and father, both of whom molded his character and his drive to succeed in any endeavor.

Maher and his wife, Margie, who also began her career as a teacher, have proudly called Williamson County home for 39 years. Their four children all graduated from Williamson County schools. Their oldest, Beth, began her career as an academic counselor on the university level before pursuing new challenges in property management. Jennifer teaches 1st grade in the Williamson County School system, while Kathleen teaches 6th grade in the Franklin Special School District. Their youngest, Jack, attends Duke University on a track and field scholarship.

Maher and his organization continue to be recognized. John Maher Builders received the “Sponsor of the Year” award at the 2016 WILLCOS (Williamson County’s version of the ESPY’s) for their outstanding support of Williamson County students. They have received multiple awards from the Nashville Business Journal, everything from recognizing John as “One of Williamson County’s 25 Most Influential People” to “Best in Business” to a 2015 award for “Corporate Giving.” For four consecutive years, John Maher Builders has been a“ Best in Business “ recipient for Middle Tennessee.

Maher has as much focus and attention to his organization today as he did building his first house and has his eyes and heart set on continuing to provide quality homes to meet the needs of Williamson and Maury counties.
